Do Stupid Criminals Just Lack Street Smarts?

Tuesday, February 28th, 2012

I think everybody loves “stupid criminal” stories. Stupid criminals come in all shapes and sizes, and commit, or at least try to commit, many types of crimes. So just for fun, I thought I’d share some stories about bumbling criminals who lack any kind of street smarts. Thanks to Michael Gravette of SafetyTechnology.com for these stories.

“According to the FBI, most modern-day bank robberies are ‘unsophisticated and unprofessional crimes’ committed by young male repeat offenders who apparently don’t know the first thing about their business. For instance, it is reported that in spite of the widespread use of surveillance cameras, 76% of bank robbers use no disguise, 86% never study the bank before robbing it, and 95% make no long-range plans for concealing the loot.”

The following advice is offered to bank robbing wanna-be’s and corresponding “don’t do’s.”

“1. Pick the right bank. …don’t follow the lead of the fellow in Anaheim, CA, who tried to hold up a bank that was no longer in business and had no money. On the other hand, you don’t want to be too familiar with the bank. Another California robber ran into his mother while making his get-away. She turned him in.”

“2. Don’t sign your demand note. Demand notes have been written on the back of a subpoena issued in the name of a bank robber … on an envelope bearing the name and address of another … and on the back of a withdrawal slip giving the robber’s signature and account number.”

“3. Avoid being fussy. One robber gave a teller a note saying, ‘I have a gun. Give me all your twenties in this envelope.’ The teller said, ‘All I’ve got is two twenties.’ The robber took them and left. She had over $1,200 in her drawer that were not twenties, including hundreds and fifties.”

“4. Don’t advertise. A hold-up man thought that if he smeared mercury ointment on his face, it would make him invisible to the cameras. Actually, it accentuated his features, giving authorities a much clearer picture.”

“5. Make sure you know where you’re going. Avoid the sad fate of the thieves in Florida who took a wrong turn and ended up on the Homestead Air Force Base. They drove up to a military police guardhouse and, thinking it was a toll-booth, offered the security men money.”

“6. Provide your own transportation. It is not clever to ‘borrow’ the teller’s car, which she carefully described to police. This resulted in the most quickly-solved bank robbery in the history of Pittsfield, Mass.”

“7. Consider another line of work. There was the case of the hopeful criminal … who, when the teller told him she had no money, fainted. He was still unconscious when the police arrived.”

The moral of these stories is … regardless of which side of the law you operate, don’t be stupid. Always be safe and prepared. Use your street smarts. Don’t have street smarts? You can develop your self-defense fighting skills with fighting DVDs. One of my favorites is Fast and Furious Street Smarts by Jacov Bressler.

STREET SELF-DEFENSE SECRETS
1. There Is No Such Thing As A Dirty Fighter, Only An Educated One - There are no rules in a street fight. You don’t know what the other person is capable of. You must fight viciously and “unfairly;” that’s the bottom line.

2. He Who Strikes First Wins – When you strike first, you put momentum on your side and your opponent is not attacking. He is reacting and being forced into a defensive mode, making it easier for you to take control of the situation.

3. Bite! – Biting is the lost art of down and dirty street combat survival fighting. You used to do it instinctively when you were a kid in elementary school. Use it now! Biting can be done from any position and anyone can do it regardless of their age, size and sex.

4. Attack Targets That Cause A Domino Effect - A man who cannot see cannot fight, so go for the eyes. A man who cannot breathe cannot fight because he is gasping for air, so choke him out or hit the throat. Hit targets that cause this type of reaction, taking the fight out of him and putting momentum on your side.

5. He Who Elevates The Violence Quicker, Wins - The difference between a Special Forces guy compared to a regular civilian is that the Special Forces guy knows how to elevate the violence more quickly. You have to go into a controlled “Killer Instinct Mode” immediately. Your opponent will not know what hit him till he wakes up hours later in the hospital.

6. Use The Element of Surprise – Do not let your attacker know what your intentions are. Attack in mid-word or phrase so you don’t telegraph your intentions of attacking, so he can’t see what’s coming his way until it’s too late.

7. You Must Have An Offensive Mindset – You must get angry! By becoming angry you control fear. You should never enter a fight with the mindset of being calm or Zen-like; this is the wrong attitude to have. Combat is 90% mental and only 10% physical, what you think is what you feel. If you go into a fight with anything less it’s like going to a gun fight with a knife and you’re going to get killed.

8. Keep It Simple – Focus on only a few techniques that are similar in movement from one another. So when you block a punch compared to disarming someone with a knife, the technique should be altered only a little so they are similar to each another and you don’t confuse yourself during an adrenaline dump. Less is more when it comes to self-defense. By knowing too many techniques, the brain during crisis mode will go through all the information that you have learned to see what technique is best to perform for the given situation. You will get confused and your reaction time will increase dramatically.

9. Use Your Environment – Every time you enter a room or any environment, scan and look to see what you can use as a weapon to take out your attacker. If you can pick it up, use it. ANYTHING GOES!!

Remember there’s no such thing as a dirty fighter – only an educated one.
