Do Stupid Criminals Just Lack Street Smarts?

Tuesday, February 28th, 2012

I think everybody loves “stupid criminal” stories. Stupid criminals come in all shapes and sizes, and commit, or at least try to commit, many types of crimes. So just for fun, I thought I’d share some stories about bumbling criminals who lack any kind of street smarts. Thanks to Michael Gravette of SafetyTechnology.com for these stories.

“According to the FBI, most modern-day bank robberies are ‘unsophisticated and unprofessional crimes’ committed by young male repeat offenders who apparently don’t know the first thing about their business. For instance, it is reported that in spite of the widespread use of surveillance cameras, 76% of bank robbers use no disguise, 86% never study the bank before robbing it, and 95% make no long-range plans for concealing the loot.”

The following advice is offered to bank robbing wanna-be’s and corresponding “don’t do’s.”

“1. Pick the right bank. …don’t follow the lead of the fellow in Anaheim, CA, who tried to hold up a bank that was no longer in business and had no money. On the other hand, you don’t want to be too familiar with the bank. Another California robber ran into his mother while making his get-away. She turned him in.”

“2. Don’t sign your demand note. Demand notes have been written on the back of a subpoena issued in the name of a bank robber … on an envelope bearing the name and address of another … and on the back of a withdrawal slip giving the robber’s signature and account number.”

“3. Avoid being fussy. One robber gave a teller a note saying, ‘I have a gun. Give me all your twenties in this envelope.’ The teller said, ‘All I’ve got is two twenties.’ The robber took them and left. She had over $1,200 in her drawer that were not twenties, including hundreds and fifties.”

“4. Don’t advertise. A hold-up man thought that if he smeared mercury ointment on his face, it would make him invisible to the cameras. Actually, it accentuated his features, giving authorities a much clearer picture.”

“5. Make sure you know where you’re going. Avoid the sad fate of the thieves in Florida who took a wrong turn and ended up on the Homestead Air Force Base. They drove up to a military police guardhouse and, thinking it was a toll-booth, offered the security men money.”

“6. Provide your own transportation. It is not clever to ‘borrow’ the teller’s car, which she carefully described to police. This resulted in the most quickly-solved bank robbery in the history of Pittsfield, Mass.”

“7. Consider another line of work. There was the case of the hopeful criminal … who, when the teller told him she had no money, fainted. He was still unconscious when the police arrived.”

The moral of these stories is … regardless of which side of the law you operate, don’t be stupid. Always be safe and prepared. Use your street smarts. Don’t have street smarts? You can develop your self-defense fighting skills with fighting DVDs. One of my favorites is Fast and Furious Street Smarts by Jacov Bressler.

Will Your Daughter Be Safe on Her College Campus?

Friday, January 13th, 2012

Will your daughter be safe on her college campus? This may seem like an extreme question to ask and I’m not trying to be a fear monger. I’m just trying to draw attention to the fact that college life, although mostly a fun and educational experience, is often fraught with dangers for young students, especially women. Before your daughter leaves home to attend college, make sure she is equipped to protect herself as well as to educate herself.

College Safety for Women on Campus

What am I getting at here? Crime, of course. The large number of crimes that are committed on college campuses every year make sense if you think about it. National statistics routinely reveal that the majority of crimes in this country are committed by young people, generally in their late teens and into their mid-twenties. College students fall into this age category. It is also a fact that a significant number of those who commit crimes do so while they are under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs. It’s an understatement to say that college students often indulge in alcohol and drug use. So it’s just a matter of putting two and two together: young people, who are more likely to commit crimes than people in older age brackets, are also likely to use alcohol and/or drugs while they are at college.

The statistics on crimes committed against female college students can make your head spin. Not necessarily because of the numbers of crimes against young women, but because they vary so much. What this tells us is that no one really knows the true extent of crimes committed on college campuses because so many crimes go unreported to the police, especially sexual crimes. So what are you supposed to conclude from my ramblings?

Simply that if you have a daughter in college, you need to be concerned about her safety. She needs to be educated about the possibilities of falling victim to crime while she is pursuing her academic education. Not just rape or sexual assault, but other types of crime as well. While I was a student, my housemates and I came home one night to find that our house had been burglarized. We lived off campus, but were just across the street from the university’s multi-purpose athletic building. Although not very many of our belongings had been stolen, it was still a scary experience and we all felt violated by the experience. We called the police, but they told us not to expect them to find out who broke into our house. And they never did. Was the perpetrator a college student under the influence of alcohol or drugs? While I can’t say for sure, I am fairly certain that whoever it was, he/she was most likely intoxicated because he/she didn’t do a very “good job” of stealing our most valuable items and we noticed that all of our alcoholic beverages were taken.

So as a parent or college student, what can you do to make sure your daughter (or yourself) stays safe while at college?

When most parents and their kids think of college or campus supplies, they think of textbooks, pens, notebooks, microwaves, popcorn, posters, and the like. But what about supplies that help keep your kids safe while they are away from home? Especially for young women, college life poses certain risks that many don’t think about very much, if at all. The prospect of going away to college and living on campus is very exciting. College is supposed to be educational and fun, NOT dangerous. But the realities are often very different. It’s difficult to determine exactly how many young women are assaulted on college campuses because not all assaults are reported, especially when it comes to sexual assault. But the statistics for reported crimes are alarming: one study concluded that at least 1 in 4 college women will be the victim of a sexual assault during her college career. It was also determined that 70 – 80% of all sexual assaults are committed by someone the victim knows. So what can parents do to keep their daughters safe at college?
